From I Can't Do This to I Did It: Tinx's Crochet Journey

Tinx's Crochet Journey — I did it

Some of the most important lessons crochet teaches us have nothing to do with yarn or stitches. For Tinx, the biggest lesson was learning to believe in herself. Here is her story.

A Craft Learned in Childhood

Tinx's crochet journey began at the age of five, when her mother taught her how to make granny squares. At the time, it was a way to keep her busy and focused, but neither of them could have known that crochet would remain part of her life for decades to come.

As the years passed, crochet came and went. Then, around fifteen years ago, Tinx picked up her hook again and began exploring different stitches and projects. She enjoyed making bears and small creations, but there was one thing she never felt confident enough to attempt. Dolls.

The One Thing She Never Believed She Could Do

No matter how many projects she completed, doll making always seemed out of reach. Looking back, she laughs about some of her early crochet discoveries. For years, she didn't realize she was working only in the front loops on many of her projects. And whenever she attempted more complex creations, things never quite turned out the way she hoped.

Then one day, she came across Crochetree. Like many crocheters seeing the dolls for the first time, her first reaction wasn't confidence. It was doubt. She watched videos, researched the patterns, and admired the beautiful dolls being created by others. But her thoughts kept returning to the same thing: "I'll never be able to do that."

Then She Saw Meredith

Something about that one doll convinced her to try. Her first Meredith wasn't easy. In fact, she describes it as very challenging. There were moments of uncertainty and plenty of questions along the way. But she kept going, reached out for help when she needed it, and slowly worked through each step.

When Meredith was finally finished, she couldn't believe what she had accomplished. The doll she thought she could never make was sitting right in front of her. And that changed everything.

One Doll Changed Everything

Since then, Tinx has created multiple Crochetree dolls, including two Meredith dolls, Count Drake, Chloe, and Charlotte. She is currently working on even more Chloe dolls, and each new project builds on the confidence she gained from that very first attempt.

Of all the dolls she has made so far, Charlotte holds a special place in her heart. But every doll represents a memory and a milestone in her journey. Each one reminds her of something she learned, overcame, or discovered about herself along the way.

Today, Tinx proudly shares her creations with others through her Facebook and Instagram communities. Her work has even been recognized by her local town council and featured on their website. For someone who once believed she could never make a doll, that's quite an achievement.

Believe in Yourself

Crochet continues to play an important role in Tinx's life. She describes it as relaxing, therapeutic, and an important way to unwind after difficult days. More than that, it gives her the opportunity to create something entirely her own.

When asked what advice she would give beginners, her answer reflects everything her own journey has taught her. Believe in yourself. Every time you catch yourself thinking, "I can't do this," replace it with, "Yes, I can." Don't give up. Because sometimes the project you think you can't make becomes the one you're most proud of.

Frequently Asked Questions

I don't think I can make a crochet doll. Can beginners really do it?

Yes. Almost every doll maker started out convinced they could not do it. Crochetree patterns guide you through each step with clear instructions and photos, and help is available when you get stuck. Like Tinx, many crocheters find that the doll they were most afraid to attempt becomes the one they are proudest of.

What does working in the front loops only do to a crochet project?

Crocheting into only the front loop instead of both loops creates a looser, more ridged, stretchier fabric, which can make amigurumi lose its firm shape. It is a very common beginner habit, and once you learn to work into both loops, your dolls hold their form much better.

Which Crochetree doll is a good first doll to make?

Any doll you feel drawn to is a good place to start, because motivation matters. Tinx's first doll was Meredith, which she found challenging but deeply rewarding. Pick a character you love, follow the pattern one step at a time, and reach out for help when you need it.

How do you stay motivated on a difficult crochet project?

Break it into small steps, celebrate finishing each piece, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Remind yourself that feeling challenged means you are learning. As Tinx puts it, every time you think "I can't do this," change it to "Yes, I can."
