The Hobby That Started at a Hospital Bedside: Leanne's Crochet Journey

Leanne with her handmade Crochetree dolls, a Crochetree Community Story

Some hobbies find us in the happiest moments, and some find us in the hardest. For Leanne, doll making began beside a hospital bed, and grew into a passion that now fills a shelf with nineteen handmade dolls. Here is her story.

A Creative Child Who Loved to Make Things

Creativity has always been part of Leanne's life. As a child, she loved anything that involved making something with her hands. Sewing, embroidery, paper crafts, if it was creative, she was interested. Her mother was an accomplished knitter, so knitting became part of her world early on.

Crochet, however, was something different. It was not until her great-aunt taught her how to make granny squares that she learned the basics. For many years, that was the extent of her crochet experience.

The Hobby That Started at a Bedside

Then, in 2021, life took an unexpected turn. When Leanne's father became seriously ill, she found herself spending long days sitting by his bedside. Like many family members supporting a loved one through illness, she wanted to be there, but the hours could feel endless. Sitting still and doing nothing was difficult, so she reached for a crochet hook and some yarn.

At the time, granny squares were all she really knew. She started experimenting, making scarves, baby toys, and children's bags. Project by project, her confidence grew. Crochet became more than just a way to pass the time. It became something calming and comforting during a challenging period.

Discovering Crochetree

Then she discovered Crochetree. The dolls immediately caught her attention, but she wasn't convinced she could make one herself. They looked beautiful and detailed, far beyond anything she had attempted before. Still, curiosity won out, and she decided to give it a try.

To her surprise, the patterns were easy to follow and approachable, even for someone stepping into doll making for the first time. Whenever she encountered a challenge, help was only a message away, giving her the confidence to keep moving forward.

One Doll Became Nineteen

One doll became two. Two became five. And before long, Leanne found herself completely hooked. Today, she has completed an incredible nineteen Crochetree dolls, with even more kits waiting patiently in the cupboard for future projects.

Looking back, it is remarkable to think that a hobby which began with a few granny squares and a crochet hook beside a hospital bed would grow into such a meaningful creative passion.

Leanne's Message for Anyone Who Doubts Themselves

Leanne hopes her story encourages others who may be doubting themselves before starting a new project. After all, she once looked at a Crochetree doll and wondered if she could ever make one. Nineteen dolls later, she has her answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can crochet help during a stressful or difficult time?

Can you go from making granny squares to making crochet dolls?

Definitely. Granny squares teach you the core skills of chaining, counting stitches, and keeping an even tension. From there, a well-written doll pattern guides you through the new techniques step by step, so the jump is smaller than it looks.

What should I do if I get stuck on a crochet pattern?

Pause, reread the step, and check the photos before unraveling anything. With Crochetree patterns you can also reach out for help directly, and there is a friendly community of makers happy to talk you through a tricky section, exactly as Leanne discovered.

Do I need to be experienced to make a Crochetree doll?

No. Crochetree dolls look detailed, but the patterns are written to be approachable, even for someone making their first doll. With clear instructions and a little patience, beginners regularly surprise themselves with how beautifully their dolls turn out.
