Whether you’re an expert or just starting out, there’s plenty of tips and tricks here that will help you become a pro in no time at all. So what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!
Know Your Materials
Whether you’re creating a new pattern or using an old one, it’s important to know the materials that are used. If you don’t know what’s in your yarn, then you won’t know how to work with it, which could result in a poor outcome. This could lead to you having to start all over again, which is something that no one wants! If you want to create the perfect amigurumi, then you need to know your materials. This means that you need to know which yarn to use, the type of hook, and what type of stuffing you’re using. If you’re using a pattern, then you should be able to see all of this information clearly.
Different patterns will require different things. It’s important to follow the directions throughout the pattern if you wish to have a similar outcome.
Pick The Right Yarn
Yarn is an important part of any amigurumi, but it can sometimes be difficult to know which type to use. How do you know which yarn is the best for your amigurumi?
Again, make sure you double check the yarn advised by the pattern designer.
You may feel the urge to use yarn you already have at home, but bear in mind your finished doll or toy may also look very different, and you don’t want to feel disappointed!
I love to use mercerised cotton for my crochet dolls as it gives them a very neat and bright finish, but I always do my best to use the yarn recommended by the designer when I am following someone else’s pattern.
Use The Right Hook
Once you’ve chosen the yarn that you want to use, you’ll then need to choose the hook size. When making amigurumi, you’ll want to use a hook that’s not too small or too large. If it’s too small, then you’ll have a lot of trouble trying to create stitches. If it’s too large, then you could run the risk of leaving holes between the stitches. You’ll want to use a hook that’s recommended for the weight of yarn that you’re using. You can usually find this information on the ball band, but most designers will tell you the ideal hook size for their projects.
Don't Forget To Sew
Once you’ve created your amigurumi, you’ll then need to sew the pieces together. This is an important part of creating any amigurumi. If the pattern you’re using doesn’t tell you how to sew your amigurumi together, then you can follow these steps:
- Place the two pieces of your amigurumi together.
- Make sure that both pieces are facing the same direction so that, once sewn, the toy looks the right way around.
- Put a small amount of stuffing inside each piece so that they’re not too baggy.
- Sew the pieces together using a yarn needle and the same yarn that you used to create the amigurumi.
Add The Final Touch With Embroidery
Once you’ve sewn the pieces together and have created your amigurumi, you’ll then need to add the finishing touches. Some patterns will require you to embroider or add features to your toy. If your pattern requires this, then you’ll need to know where to put the stitching so that it doesn’t ruin the look of your toy. Some areas that you might want to add embroidery to are the face, the hands, the feet, or around the belly. It’s up to you where you place the stitching, but make sure that it’s not too large or it could take away from the look of the amigurumi.
For the eyes of my dolls, I always work on the embroidery before finishing the head, as it can be quite complicated to make the eyes and tie the knots with the stuffing inside the head.
