Rene Markham has been crocheting since she was just eight years old, when her grandmother taught her how to make a ripple afghan. That first blanket was a proud moment, beautiful in her young eyes, and she happily gifted it to her mom. From that early start, Rene never stopped learning or creating.
Creativity runs deep in her family. One grandmother inspired her love of crochet, another introduced her to quilting, and her great-grandmother taught her the art of smocking clothes and bonnets. Surrounded by makers, Rene grew up eager to challenge herself and master new skills.
Over the years, she explored many projects, from afghans and bibs to stuffed animals, especially the Grinch, whom she jokingly calls her spirit animal. But detailed crochet dolls always felt out of reach. Each time she considered trying one, the wording of the patterns felt overwhelming and discouraging. Accustomed to older crochet language and working by eye, Rene found modern doll patterns intimidating and frustrating.
For a long time, she admired detailed dolls from a distance, unsure if she had the patience or confidence to take that next step. She knew the skill was within reach, but the fear of getting lost in complicated instructions held her back.
That changed when she discovered Crochetree.
For the first time, the instructions felt clear, approachable, and easy to follow. With confidence and excitement, Rene completed her very first detailed doll, Meredith. And the result exceeded her expectations. The experience gave her a sense of accomplishment she hadn’t felt in a long time.
Now, Rene is eagerly preparing for her next project: the Nutcracker, drawn to its elegance and challenge. What once felt intimidating has become something she looks forward to with joy.
Rene describes herself as someone who rises to challenges. If she’s told something is difficult, she’s determined to achieve it. With Crochetree patterns, that determination turned into confidence, creativity, and a renewed love for learning.
Her message to others is simple and encouraging: if you’re a beginner or someone who has hesitated to try crochet dolls because the patterns seem scary, don’t shy away. Crochetree dolls are an amazing place to start.
Rene is, in her own words, forever hooked. ❤️
