Meet Petra Haaijman-Vermeulen, a vibrant 59-year-old from the Netherlands with a heart full of love for her four beautiful children and two precious granddaughters. Petra’s creative journey began at a young age, inspired by her mother, who was an avid knitter and seamstress. Watching her mother craft beautiful clothes, Petra naturally gravitated toward creativity, eagerly mirroring her mother’s skills.
Petra’s first encounter with crochet was in elementary school, where she learned the basics and crafted small items. As she grew older, her projects became more ambitious, like making small curtains. But despite her early efforts, crochet didn’t captivate her—she found it a bit boring, and her creative interests wandered elsewhere.
For many years, Petra explored various creative outlets, from embroidery and diamond painting to making Christmas cards, cooking, and baking. But crochet remained in the background—until a surprise gift from her second daughter changed everything. The gift was a DIY crochet kit for a bunny. Though she had to refresh her memory by watching YouTube videos to relearn the stitches, Petra gave it a try. And much to her surprise, she fell in love with crochet.
The excitement of creating something beautiful with her hands reignited Petra’s passion for crafting. She quickly moved from the bunny to exploring the world of amigurumi, crafting adorable animals to give as gifts to newborn babies. Petra’s rediscovery of crochet opened up a whole new world for her, and she couldn’t get enough.
One day, while scrolling through Facebook, Petra stumbled upon a picture of a stunning doll—Louise. The sight of this beautiful creation sparked a desire in her heart. But with so many hobbies already on her plate, she hesitated. Should she take on another project? Would the English pattern be too challenging? But curiosity and passion won out. Petra decided to take the plunge, purchasing Louise’s pattern and the necessary yarn.
Armed with her knowledge of Dutch stitch names and a determination to succeed, Petra embarked on her journey to create Louise. From the first stitch to the final assembly, Petra was enthralled. The process of crafting Louise—shaping her feet, knees, head, hair, and carefully embroidering her eyes—was pure joy.
But Petra didn’t stop there. One doll led to another, and soon she found herself completely hooked. She embraced her new passion wholeheartedly, even purchasing the signature bundle of patterns to fuel her creative cravings. Her crochet journey shows no signs of slowing down.
For Petra, crochet has become more than just a hobby—it’s a source of endless joy, creativity, and fulfillment. She’s found a new way to express herself, one stitch at a time, and she couldn’t be happier.
