Passing Down the Crochet Hook: Tina Hodge's Heartwarming Journey

At 54 years old, Tina Hodge reflects on a lifelong journey with crochet that began when she was just nine. Her amazing grandmother introduced her to the craft, starting with teaching her how to crochet using her fingers. "Once I mastered a chain, she handed me a hook, and it was like an extension of my finger," Tina recalls fondly.

Her grandmother taught her the basic stitches, how to make a granny square, dishcloths, and potholders. Tina's first big project was a granny square blanket. Tragically, she lost her grandmother not long after, but the inspiration and love for creating something from just a ball of string stayed with her. "It warms my heart every time I pick up a crochet hook because I think of my wonderful grandmother," she says.

For years, Tina stuck to making blankets, washcloths, and potholders. This year, she decided to challenge herself by tackling something new: crocheting a doll from a written pattern. "I've always had difficulty understanding written patterns since I'm truly a hands-on visual learner," she admits.

She chose the Snow Queen Doll as her first project. Despite some hiccups—like getting off on the split in the dress and improvising with stitching due to a lack of sequins—Tina is incredibly proud of her creation. "I know my doll isn't perfect, but I've absolutely loved making her and seeing her become a real doll!" she exclaims.

This doll holds a special place in her heart, as she plans to gift it to her granddaughter. Continuing the family tradition, Tina is now teaching her granddaughter how to crochet. "I pray she carries on this tradition," Tina says with hope.
