From Crafting Challenges to Crocheting Triumphs: Kersty's Inspiring Journey with Crochetree Dolls

Let me share the inspiring crochet journey of one of our wonderful customers, Kersty.

Kersty has always been a fan of arts and crafts, engaging in sewing, cross-stitch, knitting, baking, and decorative cake making since she was a child. However, crochet was uncharted territory for her, as no one in her family had ever done it. Living in New Zealand, she faced challenges accessing resources, with only two online suppliers who didn't stock the entire Catona yarn range.

When she learned she was going to be an aunt, Kersty was inspired to try making a crochet dinosaur. Although our Crochetree patterns had already caught her eye, she felt they were beyond her skill level at the time. The dinosaur project didn't go as planned—nothing was the same size, and the yarn she used was pilling. Feeling disheartened, she set the unfinished project aside.

Determined to keep trying, Kersty purchased a Crochetree pattern and searched extensively for suitable yarn. Her half-sister, who also crochets, introduced her to Catona yarn. This made a significant difference, especially when "frogging" (undoing stitches). They struck a deal: her half-sister would make the doll, and Kersty would create all the clothing for their shared niece.

Learning to hold the yarn and master the stitches was a huge challenge. The Crochetree pattern was a lifesaver, providing clear and well-written guidance. When she got stuck, YouTube tutorials were a helpful resource, although the differences between American and British stitches initially caused some confusion. Trusting in the Crochetree patterns and the process was key for her. Shoes were particularly challenging, requiring many attempts and lots of frogging. The magic circle technique demanded concentration at the start, but she persisted.

After completing numerous outfits, Kersty realized her half-sister was struggling to find time to make the doll. She decided to take on the challenge herself. Making the shoes had prepared her well for crafting the legs. She found that using thread to guide the start of a row was incredibly helpful. The first knee was tricky, and her initial attempt turned out backward due to a misreading of the pattern. However, redoing it didn't take long, and she was amazed at how quickly the doll's body came together.

The Crochetree community on Facebook became an amazing resource, offering small tricks and sharing experiences about their own doll-making journeys. Following the pattern to make the eyes using cross-stitch thread was pretty easy when she followed the instructions. The hair was time-consuming—taking longer than making the doll itself—but the end result was wonderful. The personal satisfaction of completing such a beautiful item was indescribable.

To date, Kersty has made two dolls and numerous outfits. She looks at the dolls she's created and feels inspired, eager to sit down and crochet more. Her journey shows that with determination, the right resources, and support, even beginners can create stunning Crochetree dolls.

We're thrilled to have been a part of Kersty's crochet journey and can't wait to see what she creates next. If you're inspired by her story and want to embark on your own crochet adventure, we're here to support you every step of the way.
